WHO WE ARE

Family Patriarch

Frank C. Crayton was born on September 7, 1856, in Mississippi, likely into slavery, during one of the most turbulent eras in American history. Nearly seven years old when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Frank’s life journey would reflect the transformation of a nation and the resilience of a people.

Affectionately known as Papa Frank, he became a self-employed cotton farmer in Issaquena County, Mississippi. Through faith, hard work, and determination, he built stability for his growing family during a time when opportunity was limited and challenges were many. He was blessed with two devoted wives, Ella Gray and, later, Paulina Wilson, and became the father of at least eighteen children. As a husband and father, he was known as a God-fearing man who not only worked the land but also took time to teach his children how to farm, fish, trap animals, and provide for themselves.

On July 5, 1921, Papa Frank passed away after a fatal injury sustained while working on his farm. Though his life began in bondage, his legacy is one of faith, endurance, and generational impact. Today, six generations later, his descendants continue to honor the foundation he laid, carrying forward the values of family, perseverance, and gratitude to God.
